Due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus in recent weeks, the country has seen various changes that are impacting people’s everyday lives. This includes many court closures. The state of New Jersey has followed suit, closing all courts in an effort to limit the spread of the disease. The announcement was made on March 18 that there will be no Superior Court proceedings indefinitely. During these uncertain times, there can be many people impacted by these closures, which is why it is important to be aware of how to proceed.
Until further notice, the New Jersey court system is suspended due to the rapid spread of the Coronavirus. The only exceptions are ongoing trials and limited emergencies. This announcement came after the adjournment of civil commitment hearings as well as the suspension of grand juries in state courts. Municipal courts will also be suspended, but for a period of two-weeks until March 27th as of now. As a result, all people who are scheduled to appear in municipal court within this period should not appear in court and instead wait to receive notice of a new court date.
In addition to these closures, United States Chief District Judge Freda L. Wolfson adjourned civil and criminal trials that were on the schedule to start in New Jersey’s federal courts before April 30. The same holds for jury selection for these trials. These trials will be rescheduled at a later date when the courts can open. Wilson also stated that individual judicial officers can continue to hold hearings, conferences, sentencings, change of plea hearings, and bench trials. While this is true, she encourages all to do so via telephone or videoconferencing in order to not spread the virus.
