The United States Constitution allows citizens the right to bear arms. This allows them to own a firearm as long as they follow the legal process to do so. Applying for a Permit
There are two different types of permits that an individual can have in the state of New Jersey to purchase a gun:
- Handgun Purchase Permit: Known as HPP, this applies to the purchase of handguns.
- Firearm Purchaser Identification Card: Known as FPID, this permit is needed to purchase a rifle, long gun, or shotgun.
It is important to know that while these two permits are used for different types of firearms, there is only one application for them.
What Do I Need for My Application?
When an individual wants to complete an application, they are required to submit certain documentation: This includes:
- A passport
- A driver’s license
- 2 references
- An executed Consent for Mental Health Records Search
In addition to these documents, the state police will conduct a full background check in conjunction with the FBI. The vetting process will also include a search of all mental health records, an investigation by the local police, and fingerprinting.
License to Carry
In order for an individual to carry a firearm on their person, they are required to obtain a separate license. This matter is generally discretionary. The state of New Jersey requires all applicants for open carry to provide a justifiable reason for why they need to carry a firearm. This can be difficult to do unless they have a job that requires them to carry a gun or if there are any physical threats made against them.
Because the vetting process to obtain a gun permit is so thorough, the approval process to receive it is just as strict. This can often lead to applicants being denied a permit if they have committed even a small mistake throughout their life. When someone is denied a gun permit, they have the right to appeal this decision within 30 days of the denial. However, the process of appealing a permit decision is often difficult as well.
